Coir Doormats & Floor Coverings

Coir is obtained from the husk of coconut (Cocos nucifera). Coconut trees are found in abundance in Kerala and the state got its name from Kera, which means coconut.

Weaving of coir mats and floor coverings are done on handlooms and this is a cottage industry spread out mainly in Alleppey.

Designs are either woven or printed on the mats according to buyers choice using normal coir dyes or fade resistant dyes. Floor coverings include different weaves which are either provided as 4 Mtr wide rolls or cut into rugs according to choice of size, latex backed with finished sides (tucking or fringing) or with cotton or tapestry bindings. Geo textile is another product made from coir yarn, which is used for soil erosion.

Jute Rugs

Latex backing is usually provided for anti skid effect. The sides are either tucked or fringed or bindings of cotton, tapestry, rexin or reed are given. Printed Jute rugs are also available in a range of designs.
